Premillennial Problems

When I wrote about why I hold to the Amillennial eschatology, I mentioned that Sam Storms had written a brief account of why he changed his views on this issue.  In that account, he mentions 6 scriptural problems with the Premillennial view.  However, as that time, he didn’t give any Scripture references to back up his claims.

He mentions these again in his video talk on Amillennialism given as part of his 32 part Foundations series.  On that occasion he gave some Scripture references, so I reproduce them below under each of his points.

If you are a premillennialist, whether dispensational or not, there are several things with which you must reckon:

• You must necessarily believe that physical death will continue to exist beyond the time of Christ’s second coming.

1 Corinthians 15:22-26, 50-55.   In these verses we see that when Jesus returns, death ends and we are changed.  Premillennialists say these things don’t happen for another 1000 years.

• You must necessarily believe that the natural creation will continue, beyond the time of Christ’s second coming, to be subjected to the curse imposed by the Fall of man.

Romans 8:18-23.  The creation is set free when we are set free.  Premillennialists say this doesn’t happen for another 1000 years.

• You must necessarily believe that the New Heavens and New Earth will not be introduced until 1,000 years subsequent to the return of Christ.

2 Peter 3:8-13.  The new earth happens at Jesus’ second coming.  Premillennialists say this doesn’t happen for another 1000 years.

• You must necessarily believe that unbelieving men and women will still have the opportunity to come to saving faith in Christ for at least 1,000 years subsequent to his return.

2 Peter 3:8-13 again.  The return of Christ (the day of the Lord), is being delayed because that will be the end of people’s chance to turn.

• You must necessarily believe that unbelievers will not be finally resurrected until at least 1,000 years subsequent to the return of Christ.

John 5:28-29.  Premillenialists believe in multiple resurrections.  Only one resurrection is mentioned here, which comes when all will be judged.

• You must necessarily believe that unbelievers will not be finally judged and cast into eternal punishment until at least 1,000 years subsequent to the return of Christ.

2 Thessalonians 1:5-10;  Matthew 25:41-46.  Final judgement of all occurs when Jesus returns.
